Rachel Hardeman, PhD, MPH is an expert in the way racism (e.g. implicit bias, explicit bias, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, colorblind ideology, institutional/systemic racism and the white racial frame) leads to inequalities in health care delivery. She has two interrelated areas of interest and expertise:
1) The impact of racism in all its manifestations (implicit bias, explicit bias, stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, colorblind ideology, institutional/systemic racism and the white racial frame) on clinician behavior in health care encounters and clinician-patient relationships.
2) The impacts of systemic racism and racial climate in medical education on the experiences of under-represented minority physician trainees (medical students and residents).
She is committed to moving the conversation around racism in public health and health care forward through the development of interventions that contribute to our ability to empirically measure and document systemic racism and the white racial frame.
She is a very popular speaker. Her passion about translating scientific knowledge into effective strategies aimed at achieving authentic diversity and full inclusion comes through in all her work. She is an active educator, advocate, and researcher focused on the dismantling of systemic/institutionalized racism and improving racial climate in health care and other organizations.
